THE LISHON PROJECT

Our mission is to end child bed poverty in Rhyl, Prestatyn and surrounding communities by facilitating a good nights sleep to give children the opportunity to engage  at school and improve their home environment.

Why do children not have beds?

As the cost of living continues to spiral upwards in many homes beds have become luxury items for many families. After they pay rent bill, electricity bills and buy food there isn’t much left to buy a child a bed.

Bed poverty exists when a family doesn’t have the sleeping arrangements they need for their children due to a lack of financial resources. It is now very apparent that such conditions have a significant negative impact on their education and self esteem.

We want to offer each child the opportunity of starting with a good night’s sleep.

Life without a bed

The results of not having a comfortable bed to rest can be huge. The child is likely to suffer from disturbed or little sleep which negatively  impacts the child’s well-being.

As adults we know how much one bad night’s sleep can affect our mood, temper and productivity on the following day. If this occurs every night  a child is likely to experience an ongoing feeling of exhaustion, poor motivation and irritability not just at school but in the home too so there can be real challenges for parents and siblings too.

The physical and neurological development of a child can also be affected. As children sleep their bodies are refreshed and re-energised helping to fight off illness and keeping them healthy.

Having their own bed can be so important to a child and gives them a private space entirely for themselves. If they have to share with a parent or with a sibling , who may be much older or younger, the child lacks  privacy and autonomy which are so important for the child’s development and self esteem.

Our aim

Providing children with a safe place to dream

A vital part of a child’s health and well-being is to sleep in a clean, warm and comfortable place. This allows them to engage with schooling, enhances their ability to learn and is a good foundation for their future.

We want to offer each child in the area around Rhyl the chance to have a good night’s sleep.

Who are we supporting and what will we supply?

We will supply a single bed or a bunk bed ( frame plus mattress) for children aged 3 – 18 years who are in education.

Our “bed bundle” will also provide a duvet, duvet cover, sheets and pillowcases. Nightwear can also be supplied if requested,
