The Lishon Project was launched in April 2025 after consultation with Headteachers in schools in Rhyl confirmed what had been reported across other parts of the UK that children were not able to get the most out of their time in school due to chronic tiredness. The lack of a bed was impacting too at home and causing family stress.

We visited other groups providing similar support namely a Zarach Hub in Stockport and Time For Bed based on Merseyside. These visits not only confirmed the underlying need but also gave us valuable insight as to how to set up the project particularly around referrals and the need to start small.

We decided to focus then on the town of Rhyl and in particular the LL18 post code and met with Headteachers from there to get support and plan the way forward . It was important to not replicate what if anything was already being done in the town and to find  a partner organisation which was providing support for families in financially challenging circumstances.

We also needed to find a bed supplier and decided to use a local shop in Rhyl, Home Elegance to source our new beds.

An approach was made to The Bridge CommUNITY based at Sussex Street Christian Centre in the heart of Rhyl to work in partnership and this was heartily welcomed and continues. Rooted in Christian values they provide a diverse range of support services to meet the needs of many, offering hope and practical support to individuals and families when they need it the most. As well as a food bank, they provide access to nutritious and affordable essentials through their membership food club or simply offer a welcoming space to connect in the social café or art club,.

Any family or carers referred to Lishon are signposted to the support available at the Bridge CommUNITY.

We have gently extended our support to other parts of Denbighshire since autumn 2025 and provided beds to families in Saint Asaph, Denbigh, Prestatyn, Dyserth and Ruthin.

As we look ahead we intend to expand across North Wales and into parts of the City of Chester.
